Program Overview

Action and Light organized a significant community initiative to establish a traditional village community, or “Gnyat,” in Joypurhat Sadar Upazila under the project titled “Gnyati Gola: A Community Food Bank by Action and Light.” The ceremony took place on December 26, 2024, and was attended by prominent guests and community members. The initiative aims to enhance food security and foster communal harmony through traditional practices of mutual aid and cooperation.

Highlights of the Ceremony

Dr. Parimal Sarkar, as the Chief Guest, commended the initiative, emphasizing the importance of reviving traditional community structures for sustainable development. Special Guest Habibur Rahman Sujun encouraged active participation from local residents, stressing the role of unity in addressing community challenges. Dr. Sazzadul Bari, presiding over the program, elaborated on the goals of “Gnyati Gola” and its long-term vision for creating a self-reliant and supportive village community.

Formation of the Gnyat Committee

Through productive discussions with community members and stakeholders, a five-member committee was established to oversee and manage the Gnyat. The committee members are as follows:

  1. Gnyat Prodhan (Head): Sumun Shill
  2. Sohokari Gnyat Prodhan (Assistant Head): Omar Faruk
  3. Goladar (Store Keeper come Treasurer): Abdus Salam
  4. Sohokari Goladar ( Assistant Store Keeper come Treasurer) : Aminur Rahman Kalam
  5. Sohokari Goladar (Assistant Store Keeper come Treasurer) : Ashraful Islam

The members will work collaboratively to implement the goals of the Gnyati Gola project, ensuring equitable distribution of resources and strengthening community ties.

Objectives of the Gnyati Gola Project

  1. Establish a community-managed food bank to address food insecurity.
  2. Promote traditional practices of mutual aid and cooperation.
  3. Foster a sense of unity and responsibility among community members.
  4. Create sustainable mechanisms for resource management and support during emergencies.

Conclusion

The establishment of the Gnyat marks a significant step forward in empowering the community of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila. With active leadership and community involvement, this initiative holds the potential to serve as a model for other villages in the region.
